Somatic Movement and Dance
"Somatics is the study of the self from the perspective of one’s lived experience, encompassing the dimensions of body, psyche, and spirit."
Thomas Hanna
Somatic Movement and dance sessions are about becoming more embodied. The word 'soma', is a Greek word which just relates to the wholeness of the body. The term ‘somatics’ was coined by movement specialist, Thomas Hanna, who along with many other movers, started to look at ways of being that involves the senses, breath, free movement, awareness of the body’s systems, working in nature, creativity….tuning into your own sense of being - emotionally, physically and spiritually. The sessions can help support you in learning to grow your own unique, spontaneous movement practice which can be practiced anywhere - indoors or out.
In each class, there will be a weaving of floor work and standing natural movement explorations that will help you deepen your own movement intelligence and embodied sensitivity. We may find ways that your body can move on the floor, standing, dancing, or sitting.
Bring whatever is with you - if your back is painful or your knees hurt or you have had a bad day for whatever reason. We will learn how to listen to our soft (and strong) animal bodies, how they might want to move and open into finding ways to bring ease to your whole body.
